1969–1972: The Early Years

Mayer and Ninette Stiskin founded Summit on the site of what used to be Camp Rose Lake, a girls’ camp. Mayer had been working at The Summit School in Queens, NY, and the school’s directors asked him to found a summer camp so they could help children year round. The first few summers, there were about 130 campers and 50 American staff, many of them hippies! Despite having never run a camp before, the leadership worked to establish routines and traditions and get the “magic” under way from day one.
